Chapter Eleven

The glass doors whispered open and the cool breeze from the air-conditioning caused gooseflesh to bubble up on Sindy’s skin. After the heat of the afternoon sun the coolness was welcome.

The minute she’d woken up her thoughts had gone to the previous night and the patients they’d treated. Thinking about them had her mind turning to Ryan. She had vague memories of him trying to wake her up. She’d been so tired that her whole body had felt like it was fused with heavy metal. The next sensation she recalled was one of being carried up to her house. She recalled walking through the house to her bedroom, but after that things got a little hazy.

Her fingers touched her lips briefly. Had she imagined flirting with Ryan and then initiating a kiss? Had it been a dream or had it been real? When she’d woken up her shoes were off and so were her jeans. She couldn’t remember doing that and hoped it was her and not Ryan. Nothing worse than being partially undressed by a hot guy and not remembering a single second of it.

“Hi, can I help you?” a nurse asked as Sindy walked up to the registration counter.

“Hi, I’m Sindy Carruthers from Bunya Junction.” She held out her license and a business card with her name and the name of the surgery. She made a mental note to talk to Ryan about changing the name from McCarthy Family Practice. “I worked the accident site last night with Dr Ryan Flanagan, and was wondering if you had some news on a patient by the name of John. I only have his first name. He would’ve been one of the last patients transported to the hospital this morning. He had a head injury.”

“Oh, you’re Scott’s sister, aren’t you?”

Sindy smiled. Hopefully being Scott’s sister would garner her some special treatment. “Yep, I am. I’ll go see him after I check in on John.”

“Okay, just a moment, let me check for you.”

“Thanks.” The woman tapped away on the computer and Sindy looked around the foyer. Considering the trauma they’d experienced the night before, she expected the place to be crawling with relatives of the victims. A number of patients had been transported there. But the area was quiet.

“Right. I have a Mr John Popham in the system. He’s up on the third floor, room 324.” She handed back Sindy’s license, along with a visitor pass for her to wear.

Sindy clipped the pass to her top and returned her license to her purse. “Thanks again for your help.”

“You’re welcome.”

Once on the third floor she found the room she was looking for and stopped before entering. Standing by the bed talking to John was Ryan. As if he somehow sensed her presence his head turned toward where she loitered in the doorway.

“Sindy. I didn’t expect to see you here. Come in,” Ryan invited.

“Hi,” she started nervously, not sure why a bundle of nerves had taken up residence in her belly. “How are
